In 1939, before Alaska joined the union, there was the proposed 49th state of “Absaroka.” ABSAROKA! THE STATE THAT NEVER WAS is a hybrid documentary film which tells the satirical and wildly true story of attempted state secession in the west. With an outlandish cast of characters – an early Pakistani immigrant, a Native American tribe, and a group of rodeo-riding ranchers – the tale of Absaroka represents a farcical intersection of the past and future conflicts of American history and probes the endurance of national unity in troubled times.
